The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia 🇪🇹
The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, delivered a press briefing to domestic and international media on current regional, and global issues. The Spokesperson noted that the diplomatic activities undertaken over the past few weeks have reaffirmed Ethiopia’s influence and relevance as it progresses through a comprehensive phase of reform. Ambassador Nebiat highlighted that the recent successive official visits by the Presidents of Burundi, Liberia, South Sudan, and Mozambique constituted a significant diplomatic achievement. During their bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, agreements were reached that further strengthen existing ties and expand areas of cooperation. He also underscored that these visits enabled leaders to draw lessons from Ethiopia’s notable achievements and explore their application in their respective countries. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in key sectors, including agricultural development aimed at ensuring food sovereignty, the Green Legacy Initiative, artificial intelligence, Fayda digital ID, Mesob services, and broader digitalization efforts. Beyond these high-level visits, the Spokesperson noted that ministers, state ministers, and special envoys from seven countries conducted successive visits to Addis Ababa, holding consultations on bilateral, regional, and international matters, and expressing their commitment to enhanced cooperation. Ambassador Nebiat further stated that, in recent weeks, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Ministers carried out productive diplomatic engagements both domestically and across Europe. These diplomatic efforts, he added, have led to agreements to strengthen cooperation with Ethiopia in trade and investment, particularly in the sectors of renewable energy, agro-processing, technology, mining, and tourism. Regarding Ethiopia’s tenure as Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the month of April, the Spokesperson emphasized that the country’s advancements in artificial intelligence have served as a model for Africa. He noted that Ethiopia has reinforced its continental leadership role while also contributing meaningfully to broader peace and security agendas. In summary, Ambassador Nebiat stated that the diplomatic engagements of recent weeks have not only enhanced Ethiopia’s role in regional peace and stability but also increased its attractiveness for trade and investment. He emphasized that Ethiopia has advanced its national interests more assertively during this period of comprehensive reform, with its global visibility and diplomatic relevance further strengthened. On citizen-centered diplomacy, the Spokesperson addressed inquiries regarding the recent attack against Ethiopian nationals in South Africa. He expressed confidence that the South African government will duly address the matter and hold those responsible accountable. He also confirmed that the Ethiopian government is closely monitoring the situation through its embassy in Pretoria. Regarding Ethiopian nationals facing challenges in Saudi Arabia, the Spokesperson stated that the government is actively following up through its mission in Riyadh and its Consulate General in Jeddah.
