We are devastated by the unexpected loss of Professor An Yin. Prof. Yin was the heart and soul of our department, a dedicated teacher who served his students with unfailing loyalty. We are focused on supporting his family and students and will share more information soon.

Perhaps you've wondered what Doritos would look like in a CT scan. We did, so here's a clump of Cool Ranch Doritos, scanned through the bag. But there's more...🧵

@geomorphrisa @utlibraries shut down most libraries in the summer. If you want a book from those libraries, you have to request and pick up from an open library

@KyleRomine12 @FromPhDtoLife Strategic planning is critical for all ranks of promotion, as is good mentoring which is in low supply due to the competitive nature of the job. Still, being creative to explore ideas is a positive aspect of the job. No doubt boundaries exist to what will not serve promotion.

@EbeamUt @FromPhDtoLife It’s interesting that you mention that because one aspect that really drove me away from academia is the apparent LACK of research freedom. It seemed to me that new PIs spend their first decade doing quick-to-publish research and the lowest risk R01s possible. Thoughts on that?

Research shows that PhD students initially aspire to be professors, but this desire wanes over time. Some think this is because of disillusionment with academia, while others attribute it to the challenging (impossible!) job market. What do you think?

@FromPhDtoLife I go on Twitter to see what’s going on. I don’t know what happens in most grad programs, sometimes including my own, just my corner of the building. It’s good when questions like this are asked to see responses

@EbeamUt Seems to me that's the dominant narrative, though. Twitter discourse is pretty far removed from what's actually happening in most graduate programs.

@LHLogan1 Looka.com we haven’t tried it yet, relying on students but it’s fun to go thru their site and see what it comes up with

It's supposed to be a "Graphical Syllabus," but every time I say it in my head it's a "Graphical Abstract." If science articles can have graphical abstracts, why not a science course? #GraphicalSyllabus #AcademicTwitter
