Just some quick thoughts on this... 1. Disclaimer: This is Google we're talking about. Take everything with a grain of salt, we all know what they're like. 2. Less links are needed for your page to rank, sure, if you want to be on page six for a low comp KW. Also note that @methode refers to 'pages' not 'sites'. Your site's entire backlink profile is not what they're talking about here. 3. Contextual brand mentions (unlinked mentions) are becoming more important thanks (in part) to machine learning. Controversial, but this is what will separate the digital PRs from the linkbuilders. We're not the same, a good DPR will build your brand and gain some links along the way. 4. Link KPIs are outdated, they might work in some cases, but for the most part they encourage quantity over quality. If you're interested, @stekenwright did a great talk on what we should be doing instead. 5. Earn your links, don't pay for them. Stay clear of guest posts and paid links, instead put that resource into creating authentic, relevant content that your audience wants. TLDR: Links still matter, but don't chase them with 'quick win' tactics. Instead, create authentic content and rankings will follow.
