On International Women's Day, see the women working on A Tryal Of Witches as well as two young female cast members. "In this production women are at the centre of the story both on stage and behind the scenes. As a woman, it isn't always easy to work in a male dominated industry, particularly for mothers, due to the late nights, childcare costs and relocation. So to be surrounded by such wonderful, strong, skilled women - who are mothers, carers, partners - fills me with pride." @Zoe2Fox, A Tryal Of Witches Producer. @B_Tallulah, A Tryal Of Witches playwright: "We know next to nothing about the women hanged in the Suffolk witch trials - on international women’s day it feels especially poignant to be breathing life into these characters. An all-female cast takes on a new level of profundity when staging a play about misogyny. Hopkins spouted such deranged theories about women I’ve loved the way in which having a woman playing him subtly undermines him - we’ll call it Brechtian feminism." #internationalwomensday

Today me and one of our @TheatreRoyalBSE bears had a great time visiting @CulfordSchool. I had wonderful time working with their A-Level Drama upper six’s on their devised pieces for their upcoming exams. This was part of our current partner package across the Culford site.

Owen Calvert-Lyons, Artistic Director at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds - “We are delighted to have received this funding from Suffolk County Council, which will enable us to work with communities across West Suffolk. However, even with this award, this now amounts to an 80% cut to our funding from Suffolk County Council. We would highlight that single-year project funding like this does not allow charities like ours to make long-term plans for the benefit of Suffolk residents, and we will continue to advocate for multi-year funding agreements which properly support the work of this vital sector. However, this year’s grant is welcome news and will enable us to continue to deliver life-changing opportunities for the people of Suffolk.” From the East Anglian Daily Times: "Suffolk County Council has announced a series of grants, which range between £1,000 and £27,000, from the Culture Project Fund. The new fund was launched as council chiefs backtracked on plans to cut arts funding following a furious backlash to its proposals by organisations across the county last year. The council's decision was met with criticism from a number of key figures, including Dame Judi Dench, patron of the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Following the backlash, Suffolk County Council announced it was going to have a £500,000 project fund to which all Suffolk's arts and heritage organisations could apply for. This fund attracted 131 applications, requesting a total of £2million in funding." #burystedmunds #suffolk #theatre #artsandculture

TINY PLAYS, BIG IDEAS 🌟 Teaching year 6 students how to write their own play from start to finish! Our Creative Learning team are in their fourth year of delivering this impactful project with East Anglian primary schools and the delivery of workshops begins next week! Students are mentored by leading local playwrights (Kitty Morgan, Martha Loader and James McDermott) who over a period of weeks deliver two workshops, giving young people the tools to write their first play. Once the workshops are complete, students are set free to create a play about whatever their heart desires. Previous Tiny Plays titles include: Evil King Jeff, The Journey to Glory, When Squirrels Saved the Earth, Slaptoe Pants Saves the World and Karen’s Day Out! Our fantastic team read ALL of the plays (over 300!) and choose at least one from each school to be performed by local professional actors on our stage. Students are invited to watch the mayhem unfold in front of their eyes as their plays are acted out on stage. Participation in the programme is free however spaces are limited. We also offer bursaries to support with coach travel. Tiny Plays, Big Ideas is supported by the Ridley Godfrey Foundation, @ace_national and @suffolkcc. #letscreate

We’re so excited to begin this important project @TheatreRoyalBSE - the beginning of an exciting journey for our stage lighting. Thank you for this investment in our theatre @TheatresTrust

🎭🌟 Exciting news! 🌟 We have been awarded £20,000 from the @TheatresTrust to upgrade our stage lighting to lower their environmental impact! 🌿🔆 This upgrade will not only save energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint, but also enhance the experience for audiences and artists. 🌟 Dave Thwaites, Technical Manager at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds said: “As part of our ongoing strategy to identify improvements to make our building more energy efficient, we have identified the need to replace our ageing lighting rig. This project would provide us with the capital to make an immediate ‘quick win’ energy efficiency adaptation, that will endure, and, when the full lighting rig is replaced, it will ensure a minimum saving of over £30,000 annually, along with an annual saving of around £2000 on lamp replacements, so is key to our future sustainability.” “Theatre Royal is committed to developing environmentally sustainable practices. We want our unique, Grade-I listed building to be a fusion of historic architecture and cutting-edge technology. These new LED lanterns will not only give our artists the very best tools to work with, they will also reduce our energy costs and our carbon footprint.” – @Owencl, Artistic Director at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.
