He is correct. Shona is a colonial construction that was formalised in 1931 by South African linguist, Dr Clement Doke, who was hired by the Rhodesian government to create a common language for the black population outside of the Ndebele-speaking communities. It is an insult to be called Shona, and those who do so deserve to be called out. The term was never indigenous; it was imposed by colonial administrators to lump together diverse groups for easier control. We are Manyika, Zezuru, Korekore, Karanga, Ndau, and Barwe — each with our own distinct histories, dialects, and cultural identities. The name “Shona” erased these differences and served as a colonial tool of homogenisation.

If you listen to President Julius Malema with hatred you will live a very angry Life against yourself until the end of your time because the Truth will remain the Truth even after Life. #EFFisMyHome

Yesterday, at the East London Sub-Regional Youth General Meeting, in the Eastern Cape, we explained and simplified an important principle in the constitution of the EFF: Democratic Centralism. In the words of Lenin, “diversity in discussion, unity in action.”
