So, theoretically we will be releasing and recording episodes again soon. But for now, I’d just like to say a very hearty #AbolishICE on behalf of our podcast where we believe in the Constitution and support immigrants and all our neighbors.

It cannot be underestimated how much of the appeal of “Heated Rivalry” is simply because it’s well-made romance that is constructed with the same care as any dramatic program, not just churned out like disposable “content.”
Jennifer Howell@genxjenh

@cadlymack Not just romance, but romance with well-done cinematography and production design. Romance with good acting. Romance with some long dialogue scenes. Romance that isn’t some streaming slop made to algorithm. Romance that respects its audience.

#HeatedRivalry is the best romantic new release I’ve seen in some time. It gets a lot of attention for being hot, which it is, but it’s also deeply emotional. Episode 5 made me cry beautiful tears. I can’t wait to see what’s next from all involved!

@torturedfilm I cannot stand how impatient this movie was to change scenes, change songs. Nothing resonates because Netflix is scared of being too slow which might mean you’ll stop watching. But ironically by not allowing time for relationships to develop, that becomes boring.

@torturedfilm The 2000s are one of the worst eras for rom coms, though. The 80s-90s had great scripts, lots of feminism, and lingered in scenes. The 30s-40s had great screwball romances with strong women. The 2010s were experimental. This was just the pale knockoff version of like 27 Dresses.

the thing is that pwmov follows the romantic comedy formula of the 00’s rather than being a faithful adaptation that is why there are so many changes and gaps. in the end it is a movie that was translated to the screen as a romcom for nostalgia and reintroducing the genre.

@farrowlover Yeah, I read the book and even with that scaffolding the romance just seemed to come out of nowhere; it wasn’t supported by the script.

@shivlestat It was badly written. I think good writers could have made a good feature but instead four people were probably asked to tweak this for some algorithm, thereby draining it of all its sauce.

I really needed #PeopleWeMeetOnVacation to be good amidst all this fascism. But sadly it seems to have been adapted via algorithm for people with no attention spans. Hey @netflix the audience for this can *read.* Maybe let scenes breathe so half the movie doesn’t feel like an ad.

I’m hesitant to invest in TV shows because of the time commitment, but I want to watch more this year. Any recommendations with great stories and strong character development?

George Clooney names Timothée Chalamet, Glen Powell and Zendaya as younger performers who impress him, but believes the era of the movie star has ended: “The thing where you put someone’s name above the title and you go see a movie because they’re in it has ended,” Clooney says. “And I’m part of the last generation of stars who were a beneficiary of a studio really investing in them.” wp.me/pc8uak-1lGIVX

Romance movies are probably my least favorite genre. I would consider myself a romantic, but romance movies so often fall short for me. Once in a great while I will find one that I love. Phantom Thread, The Remains of the Day, Anora, Punch Drunk Love, Her, As Good As It Gets, Brokeback Mountain, Charade. But on the whole, romances don't hit the mark for me. And it's not the subject matter, it's that so many of them are contrived, predictable and unrealistic. No one actually begs on someone else's front lawn in the rain for them to take them back. No one actually runs through a train station and stops the train at the last second because they already said goodbye to their love but decided they couldn't let them leave. No one meets their wife when one of them drops something and they both go to pick it up and bump heads. Or walking their dogs and the leashes get tangled. Give me a divorced suicidal alcoholic who finds a damaged woman and they heal each other. Give me a woman who has a dangerous affair with an occupying soldier or someone in a forbidden class of society. I like raw, realistic depictions, not a saccharine fantasy. What's your relationship with romance movies? 🤔

@DWLundberg @Criterion My Ozu “Floating Weeds” disc would make the cut for sure! I like Ozu’s other stuff too, but that movie has a special place!

@riversersh Let’s just do an eventual White Lotus crossover where their actual characters from Challengers end up at the resort 10 years later or something.

@ohsethy To be fair there are two Josh O’ Connor films, No Other Choice and Hamnet still left on the table, so who knows? But I love Celine Song. I get her vision.
