for example: 貸す (kasu) without memorizing, i can tell this is a godan verb because it ends in -u and i'm confident enough to guess the ます-form is 貸します. but, if i’m unsure, i can confirm it by looking at its conjugation chart. well, let’s check the chart: the final syllable す falls under the "s" column in the dictionary form row. this means, for ます-form, its stem changes to し and yup, after checking the dictionary, the ます-form of 貸す is 貸します. so, 貸す is correctly a godan verb✅

(this is how i learn Japanese by observing and understanding the patterns, not just memorizing) #langtwt #日本語 yesterday, @widanonihongo and i were talking about godan and ichidan verbs. and she asked, "do i really have to memorize all of them? isn’t there another way?" personally, i prefer not to memorize which verbs are godan and which are ichidan (except for the "exceptions"). instead, i distinguish them by identifying their characteristics and understanding "godan conjugations" (cont)
