My new series "Universe" starts tonight on @BBCTwo at 9pm. The reviewer in The Times called it "deep, profound and a little bit scary". Mind you, the Guardian said they didn't understand it and wrote about D:ream instead, so each to their own I suppose :-) I hope you enjoy it!

A celebration of getting things back on track after putting our speaker series on hold and back to doing what we love with @CabalRum @HQSWellington. Members and non-members save the date for what is set to be a fantastic evening at a top notch location. More details to follow.

The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration
Sept. 1911 - Scott's (centre standing) whole party (-2) outside the Cape Evans hut. Spring journeys were being made while the sea-ice was still strong and stable, final preparations and plans for the journey to the South Pole were put into place. A time of promise and excitement.

In her new book, “The Brilliant Abyss,” Helen Scales writes about the largely unseen realm of the deepest parts of the #ocean. On this week’s podcast, she talks about the life down there — and how long it took us to realize there was any at all: nyti.ms/2WXGpYB @nytimes

The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration
1902 - The German ship Gauss. Leader Erich von Drygalski ascends in a tethered hydrogen balloon to 490m, he can talk to the ship through a telephone line. "It was so warm up there I could even take off my gloves". Note the large wind tail of snow extending behind the ship.
