Ankara Talks Risk New Regional Chaos; Potential Diplomatic Clash Looms Between Ethiopia and Israel!
(April 25, 2026 – Ethio 251 Media)
The ongoing Turkish-mediated negotiations in Ankara, aimed at resolving the rift between Ethiopia and Somalia, are sparking fears of a new wave of regional instability, potentially placing Ethiopia on a direct collision course with its long-time strategic ally, Israel.
Diplomatic sources have revealed to Ethio 251 Media that the talks led by Ethiopia's Foreign Minister, Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie, and his Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, involve terms that would require Ethiopia to sideline its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland. Analysts warn that such a move—which effectively denies Somaliland the recognition previously pursued—could trigger a severe confrontation with Israel, which has recently extended diplomatic recognition to Somaliland and maintains deep strategic interests in the territory.
Israel views Somaliland as a critical partner in safeguarding its security interests across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. There is growing concern that if Ethiopia reduces its ties with Somaliland or reneges on previous sovereignty-related promises in favor of the Ankara deal, it will incite significant hostility from Tel Aviv.
Furthermore, Turkey’s aggressive expansion of its military and diplomatic footprint in the Horn of Africa is viewed with deep suspicion by Israel. Ethiopia's pivot toward Turkish mediation is seen as a threat that could derail its long-standing military and intelligence cooperation with Israel, leading to a major breakdown in bilateral relations.
Geopolitical experts also highlight that this diplomatic shift is likely to provoke a fierce backlash from Somaliland, destabilizing the regional balance of power and igniting fresh chaos in East Africa. Beyond the threat of Al-Shabaab, experts warn that if Ethiopia's quest for sea access alienates powerful regional actors like Israel, the country could find itself engulfed in an unprecedented diplomatic and security crisis.
While the Ankara negotiations focus on providing Ethiopia with maritime alternatives, diplomatic sources indicate that the ultimate price may be a high-stakes conflict with Israel and the further destabilization of regional peace.
