I get the “just leave NL” reaction to the new tax rules. But not everyone can—or wants to. Work. Family. Friends. Roots. If you stay, you need alternatives. Investing via a B.V. isn’t perfect, but it’s often better than doing nothing. Be rational: adapt or leave. Just don’t spend years complaining.

Want Financiële geletterdheid onder journalisten is zeer beperkt Ik heb zelf in 2018 een jaar de minor journalistiek gevolgd op de Universiteit Leiden en er waren meer studenten die de studie Gender & Equality deden dan Economie. We kunnen boos zijn op de media, maar het is zaak dat meer mensen met een financiële achtergrond de overstap naar de journalistiek maken. Dan was die nieuwe Box 3 kritischer ondervraagd en er misschien wel nooit gekomen.

The Netherlands is about to commit financial self-destruction. Their parliament just passed a 36% tax on unrealized gains for investments. This will cause wealthy people to move to another tax jurisdiction. People will avoid launching a new business. Stock market investing will dry up. There is too much downside risk, very little upside potential. The govt is confiscating most of the potential upside, but leaving the investor with the downside risk. The politicians know this, they have discussed it and they are concerned about it. But they did it anyways to close a short term budget gap of roughly $2 billion. As with other countries that attempted a wealth tax, it will likely backfire and result in less tax collected after wealthy people leave. The results will be so negative, the govt will reverse course within a few years. But by then the damage is already done.

The new radical left wing govt in the Netherlands is imposing a wealth tax on unrealized gains on stocks. Just like in other countries where this has been tried, it will likely result in the wealthy moving to another tax jurisdiction.
