This week's column: Expecting the government to step in with emergency handouts every time prices go up just makes us all feebly dependent on the State. We need to man up and stop expecting Superman to fly to the rescue.m.independent.ie/opinion/commen…

@NoushardMUFC Id swear if this fan base wasn't moaning, someone would need to test their pulses.... 3rd in the league, more hope in the last 2 months that we'd had in the previous 12 months and it's not perfection so let's start picking holes again.... Get a life

What Happened to Mbeumo and Amad? The short answer is simple. The system changed. Under Amorim’s 3-4-3, United played structured football. Every movement was coached, every phase was clear, and every player knew where the next option would be. That clarity is what made Mbeumo and Amad so effective. On the right side, their roles were defined and synchronized. Their movements complemented each other, creating repeatable patterns that consistently led to chances, goals, and assists. They were not guessing. They were executing. That is what system football does. It elevates players who understand space, timing, and structure. It gives them a framework to maximize their strengths. When Carrick came in, the team shifted back to a 4-3-3 with less emphasis on patterns and more reliance on individual quality. The structure disappeared. Now, instead of operating within clear roles, players are making decisions in isolation. Movements are less coordinated, and connections between players are weaker. For players like Mbeumo and Amad, that change is significant. They are system players. They perform best when there is clarity, when movements are predictable, and when teammates are exactly where they are expected to be. Take that away, and their impact drops. This does not mean they have become worse players. It means the environment around them no longer supports their strengths. Meanwhile, players who thrive in chaos can still produce moments, which is why the team may still get results in certain games. But the bigger picture remains. Mbeumo and Amad have not declined. The system that made them effective is no longer there.

@SimonHarrisTD Any chance you can loosen the noose a little from those badly in need of it, struggling with heating, fuel and the price of a weekly shop... And something meaningful, not token gesture nonsense

I welcome the S&P rating agency’s upgrade of Ireland’s long-term sovereign credit rating to AA+. The upgrade reflects their assessment that our strong economy, considerable fiscal buffers and record of sound fiscal management will help to mitigate the impact of external shocks.

@Lea_EFC No doubts Maguire committed a foul, most utd fans will admit that but it's a definite penalty on Amad that would have put us 2-0 up... Shame you cant admit that also

Manchester United fans POV: ✅ Amad was pushed over and we’ve been robbed of a stonewall penalty ❌ Maguire pushed the Bournemouth player over but he went down far too easy. No penalty Double standards

@DaleJohnsonBBC Jersey pull on a player in possession of the ball is always a foul - nothing subjective about it ...

@Fintolini It is completely accurate. A subjective decision requires interpretation and is based on personal opinion. Cunha requires interpretation and is based on personal opinion. Very few would say Cunha is not a penalty which is key, because that means it's not in the grey area.

There are degrees of subjectivity. For instance and as stated, Maguire and Evanilson are in the grey zone. Cunha is still subjective but absolutely a penalty.

@DaleJohnsonBBC @sistoney67 This is very silly. Every penalty decision is subjective.

@DaleJohnsonBBC You said every decision about a foul is subjective ... That is not accurate. Every person for example, everyone, knows by law of the game the Cunha foul is a penalty, 100% of the time... There is nothing subjective about it at all

@DaleJohnsonBBC 🤣 so var can never intervene then if it's always subjective ... How could var ever have the authority to intervene in that case, if ever decision is subjective, how could they ever determine a decision to be clearly and obviously wrong ...

@DaleJohnsonBBC VARs job is to assist with clear and obvious errors, if you don't think the lack of penalty for a clear push on Amad isn't a clear and obvious error then you are delusional....

On Amad and Evanilson penalty situations. Both might or might not have been penalties. They are subjective, in the grey zone. So on-field decision stands. VAR's role is not, and ever has been, to create consistency of decision making. Each is judged individually. #BOUMUN
