I enjoyed this piece on the cognitive effects of AI over-reliance ('brain drain') by Erik Hoel, who concludes that 'pro-human bias and AI distrust are cognitively beneficial.' Surely one of the big stories of most technology in the last decade though has been the attempt to remove friction from the user experience, and streamline use for the maximum amount of people possible - dumbing down. Music software is a great example of that - to me it seems like the big developments this decade have been more about ease of use than about flexibility or expression. So many of these tools try to anticipate your workflow in advance, and close down avenues of use and opportunities for learning at the same time. The result is a deluge of 'just good enough' music, and huge numbers of dissatisfied creatives who can't figure out why so few people are interested in their work.
