I despise Alex Crook with every fibre of me. But I understand why some people feel this way, although I don’t think it’s correct. I have seen Romero put in performances that have had me convinced he’s the best centre back in the world. And I’ve seen him put in performances where it looks like he’s actively sabotaging the team and is a direct reason for us losing games. More than any other player, I think his performances rely entirely on how engaged and committed he is to the project and the manager. He starts every single game for Argentina, and is one of their most relied upon players. All those in the national team rank him as world class, and his performances for Argentina are incredibly consistent. Because he believes in what they are doing. Unfortunately, apart from a small spell under Ange, Romero’s Tottenham career has been a reflection of the inconsistency at the club. He’s played under Nuno, Conte, Stellini, Mason, Ange, Frank, Tudor and now De Zerbi. That’s 8 managers in 5 years, with wildly contrasting styles. We’ve seen the best and the worst of him at Spurs. But I still believe under the right manager, one which he believes in, we have a truly elite centre back at our club. In reality it’s 50/50 if he’ll be at the club next season any way. But I do feel he will be one that De Zerbi could improve and De Zerbi feels like the type of character that Romero could buy in to. We’ll see
