Been watching 90's family movies like Kindergarten Cop and Beethoven with the kids and its so radicalizing. Just perfect American cities. I grew up in a town like the ones portrayed in these movies.
Its not just that these places went from 95+%, to like 75-80% white. Its how the communities have fragmented and atomized. People don't know each other anymore. There is no larger community. Its just a series of happenstance, temporary associations based on kid's sports or whatever. Nothing is deep anymore.
I grew up in a town that was mashed in with 5 other towns and everyone knew everyone. This group of towns had maybe 7,000 people in it. There were probably 6-7 events that almost everyone showed up to. School carnivals, fire department pancake breakfasts, church stuff. Thats all gone now, at least in the places I see.
All these community activities have shrunk and even with that you go to them and you know maybe 3-4 people, and they're all from kid's sports or daycares. People you'll never talk to again in a year.
