Wife of a Croatian officer (“Dame d’un Officier Croate”) Until the mid-19th century, European armies were not exclusively male as we often imagine today. Many women, sometimes entire families with children, followed the troops. Some accompanied their husbands or lovers, while others earned a living serving the army in various support roles, such as sutlers or laundresses. Some even disguised themselves as men to fight as soldiers, a practice strictly forbidden but often quietly tolerated. Early modern armies were survival communities in which women played a natural role. Though they appear in contemporary images, they remained largely unmentioned in official records. This drawing, according to the inscription, depicts the wife of a Croatian officer. Officer’s wives formed a privileged group, accompanying their husbands by choice rather than necessity. She wears a costume likely inspired by her husband’s regimental uniform: a short white military coat with red facings, tight Hungarian-style trousers visible beneath a flared white skirt, and a blue cloth-covered shako with a plume. Her horse is equipped like a hussar’s, draped with a wildcat pelt over the saddlecloth. Wife of an officer from a Croatian border regiment of the Austrian army (c. 1800). The Horvaty family (Горваты) from present-day Belarus was a Catholic noble family active in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later in the Russian Empire and interwar Poland. They descend from the Croatian soldier Jan Nikšić, who moved to Lithuania at the beginning of the 17th century, acquired nobility, was naturalized, and became a landowner. Over the following centuries, the Horvaty family grew into major landowners, owners of numerous estates and castles, and held significant administrative, military, and political positions in local and state authorities. 1/2

Tomorrow, 22 July, is the 30th anniversary of the Split Agreement, in which Croatia accepted Bosnia and Herzegovina's appeal for Croatia to send in its military to save Bosnia from Serbian aggression. A key event that saved BiH as a state. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_Agr…

Fun fact. The term "Ustaša" politically came from the Montenegrins originally, some 20-30 years before it was adopted by the Croatians
