This week’s highlighted case at the OVAC Sports Museum is Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, OH. The Bulldogs have been members of the conference since 1946.
Bridgeport has been a valued small school member of the conference and has boasted a very strong athletic tradition. In its time in the OVAC, the Bulldogs have captured over 30 championships with a third of those claimed by the boys basketball program.
Bridgeport arguably has one of the greatest athletic alumni bases for a school of its size in the state of Ohio and maybe across the entire US. Bridgeport has alumni inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
After graduating from Bridgeport, John Havlicek went on to play basketball at Ohio State where he helped the Buckeyes win the school’s lone men’s basketball national championship in 1960. Havlicek was drafted seventh overall in the 1962 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and was a key contributor in the “C’s” success in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Havlicek was an eight-time NBA champion, the 1974 Finals MVP, a 13-time NBA All-Star was elected to the NBA First Team four times and has both his #17 and #5 jerseys retired by Boston and Ohio State respectively. Along with many other accomplishments, "Hondo" was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.
Phil Niekro had a hall-of-fame baseball career and was mostly known for his signature knuckleball. Nicknamed “Knucksie,” Niekro played 24 years in the MLB and accumulated over 300 wins, over 3,300 strikeouts, was a five-time MLB All-Star and won five Gold Glove awards, along with many other accomplishments. Niekro was inducted into the National Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1997. Phil’s brother Joe also had a storied MLB pitching career. Joe played 22 seasons of MLB baseball and won 221 games, was an All-Star and the NL leader in wins in 1979, and was a World Series Champion in 1987. With a combined 539 wins, Phil and Joe have the MLB record for the most pitching wins by a pair of brothers.
Bobby Douglas experienced a boatload of success both as a competitor and a coach across the globe in wrestling. Douglas was a two-time Ohio state champion for the Bulldogs and also went on to win an NAIA National Championship while wrestling at West Liberty. Douglas then transferred to Oklahoma State University where he won a Big Eight (now Big 12) Conference Championship at 147 lbs. and helped the Cowboys to two Big Eight team titles and a 1964 NCAA team title. After graduating from Oklahoma State, Douglas went on to compete internationally for the United States. Douglas placed fourth in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the Featherweight division and was team captain for the US in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He also was a silver medal and bronze medal winner in the 1966 and 1970 World Championships respectively. After his competition career, Douglas went on to be the Head Wrestling Coach at Arizona State and Iowa State and also coached the United States in multiple Olympics. He was enshrined in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1987.
Bridgeport also has dozens of former high-level collegiate and professional athletes, such as Johnny Blatnik and Bill Jobko, who went on to have respected MLB and NFL careers respectively.
To see this case and the cases of current and former OVAC schools, be sure to visit the OVAC Sports Museum inside Wheeling's WesBanco Arena!
