Zelenskyy has proposed creating an alternative to NATO that includes Ukraine, the EU, and several other countries. Commenting on reports of a possible US withdrawal from NATO, President Zelenskyy said that Europe should strengthen its role. Therefore, the EU, together with Ukraine, the UK, Turkey, and Norway, could create a military bloc capable of deterring Russia. "Without Ukraine and Turkey, Europe will not have an army comparable to the Russian one. With Ukraine, Turkey, Norway, and Britain, you will control security at sea – and not just one," he said, adding that he is confident in Ukraine's future accession to the EU. It is worth noting that most Ukrainians still support joining NATO but do not fully trust the Alliance. Specifically, 68.9% of the population supports Ukraine's membership in NATO. However, only 54.7% of respondents trust the Alliance, while 41.5% do not. Ukrainians' trust in NATO largely depends on the practical assistance provided by the Alliance, according to 18.5% of respondents. Also having the greatest impact on trust are: protection for Ukraine (13.3%) and security guarantees (11.8%). In contrast, NATO is distrusted primarily because of its behavior in the war: the Alliance is perceived as not doing enough and as acting slowly and indecisively.
