Italy is set to become the first country to ban lab-grown meat and anyone caught producing or using it could face a fine of €60,000 🚨🚨🚨 🔊 Does anyone really want fake lab-grown meat? These companies don’t share their process of what they are putting into those tanks to grow the meat. I don’t understand where this is coming from that they think this is a market that needs to be addressed.

Universities would be better having trained marketing staff to share the excellent science they generate rather than offering a introverted researcher to share years of work in a 3 minute radio interview. Without this the science will lose the debate to populist opinion

Where academics communicate to mainstream media eg. radio 4 today program, too often their message is unclear and they lack the necessary media training. In contrast NGOs and influencers run well managed campaigns with simple messages that the public can understand 2/3

Academics have to accept their share of failure to communicate science to the public. Focusing on journals read by academics and written in an inaccessible format for the wider public. They often struggle to explain work in an understandable format even to other academics 1/3

It would therefore seem that influencers and NGOs consider their opinion is at least equivalent to peer reviewed scientific publications. After the famous “people have had enough of experts” quote during the Brexit debate it seems populist views now trump proven science (3/3)

Livestock production and meat consumption are a major target. It would seem it is easier to publish scientific papers and get publicity if your conclusions are that meat is bad/unhealthy/bad for the environment than an alternative finding (2/3)

Last night I ate my first 3-D constructed steak, made entirely from plants, at the great Chouchou restaurant in Stockholm. It's astonishing. The texture's exactly right and the taste is excellent. This is *before* we have precision fermented proteins, encapsulated fats and heme.
