Reeves now says: 'Today the letting agency and my husband have found correspondence confirming that on 17th July 2024 the letting agent said to my husband that a Selective Licence would be required and agreed that the agency would apply for the licence on our behalf.'

After @HarriLine’s excellent scoop, No 10 is now in the perplexing position of refusing to say whether Keir Starmer or Laurie Magnus saw any proof from Rachel Reeves for her version of events over her rental licence, whether they believe she did or did not break the ministerial code, or whether she’d have to resign if she was fined for the breach, despite the PM’s belief that lawmakers cannot be lawbreakers. Southwark Council could levy a fine of up to £30k… A spokesman for the PM repeatedly said the chancellor’s error was “inadvertent” and she did not know a licence was required. But asked whether the PM, as a former DPP, thought ignorance of the law was a defence he said: “No.” He said the PM was satisfied an apology was a “sufficient resolution”.

The Prime Minister must launch a full investigation. He once said “lawmakers can’t be lawbreakers”. If, as it appears, the Chancellor has broken the law, then he will have to show he has the backbone to act.
