These activities don’t leave much time for side-gigs (though many of us are forced to get extra work anyway so that we can pay the bills). I’m not asking for 6 digits. I just want to pay my rent and feed myself. How about a stipend we can actually live off? #RaiseTheStipend

Let’s add some context: in my field of #conservation #ecology, a #PhD might involve developing relationships with stakeholders or #codesign of research questions, repeat field seasons or extensive lab work, complex modelling and analysis, and publication of AT LEAST 3 papers 1/2

We’re also expected to attend conferences, write our own grant applications, review papers and more, all for 2/3 of MINIMUM wage, with many of us being cut off at 3 years. Totally ethical right? #RaiseTheStipend 2/2

Let’s add some context: in my field of #conservation #ecology, a #PhD might involve developing relationships with stakeholders or #codesign of research questions, repeat field seasons or extensive lab work, complex modelling and analysis, and publication of AT LEAST 3 papers 1/2

For anyone seriously considering undertaking a #PhD in Australia: 1) some unis offer higher stipends - up to $7K(!) more pa than the min rate. 2) some unis offer stipends for longer durations - up to 4(!!) years (standard is 3). Choose your institution wisely! #RaiseTheStipend

One of the most profound experiences I have ever had was tracking wildlife with the Indigenous people of the Tanimi desert. It is hard to explain just how much knowledge has been built up and shared over many generations. Was amazing how willing they were to share their knowledge
