Chinese Tech Companies Accelerate AI Investment and Emerging AI Trends Despite the U.S. chip embargo, Chinese tech giants are still spending billions of USD on AI, demonstrating their ambition to lead in this field. Amid escalating U.S.-China trade tensions, especially with stringent U.S. sanctions on AI chips, China's leading tech companies are rapidly increasing their investment in artificial intelligence (AI) on an unprecedented scale. Just in the first half of 2023, three major conglomerates—Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu—invested a total of 50 billion yuan (around $7 billion USD) in AI infrastructure, a significant jump from 23 billion yuan in the same period last year. A key player in this robust investment trend is Alibaba, which spent 23 billion yuan on AI, up 123% from the same period the previous year. Alibaba's CEO, Eddie Wu, affirmed that the company is focusing significant resources on AI research and development to meet the growing customer demand, with expectations of high returns on investment (ROI) in the future. In addition to internal R&D, Alibaba is also actively investing in potential AI startups. Notably, in February of this year, Alibaba invested nearly $800 million USD in the AI startup Moonshot, primarily in the form of cloud computing service credits. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is also part of this race. With cash reserves of up to $50 billion USD, ByteDance holds a unique advantage in making long-term AI investments without facing pressure from investors, a challenge that many publicly-listed companies cannot easily navigate. Although the U.S. has tightened export controls on AI chips, particularly high-end models like Nvidia’s H100 and Blackwell, Chinese tech companies remain undeterred.
