(I can't speak to whether or not THE EXORCIST, CRIES AND WHISPERS, or A TOUCH OF CLASS should have beaten THE STING or AMERICAN GRAFFITI, because I haven't seen them. Sorry!)

As good as I think THE STING is (esp. when it comes to its screenplay), I think fellow 1973 BP nominee AMERICAN GRAFFITI is better. It's more relatable on an emotional level, which carries a lot of weight with me. I also think the script is impressive in its own naturalistic way!

Basically, I had fun with JANE AUSTEN’S MAFIA! even if it doesn’t really work as a movie. If you also tend to admire boldly stupid comedy, maybe give it a try (but temper your expectations)!

Am I going to tell you this movie’s good? No. I can’t FULLY recommend it. I did get some laughs out of it, though, and I can’t help but admire the movie’s willingness to be so deliberately, unapologetically, boldly stupid in the name of comedy. That’s brave and noble, imho!

@DWLundberg In a way, I feel sorry for them, because I think a big part of it stems from insecurity. They're so unsure of their manhood and who they are that they couldn't handle a partner who challenges them by being an equal partner and unique person.

Uh… that’s sexist. Two notes: 1- Women are allowed to have emotions, expect support from their partner, and have a life. 2- Funny how guys like this think that a woman’s sole aim is to attract a man, when they’d be FURIOUS if a woman gave them any constructive criticism.

And 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 the movie has the audacity to make it Gwen's fault for not listening to him. The whole movie is about Peter trying to get his friends to listen to reason, and when they don't, they suffer for it. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is such a cynical, backwards thinking movie.

I haven’t seen FIRST MAN or BLADE RUNNER 2049 in a long time, but all you have to do is compare Gosling in THE NICE GUYS to Gosling in BARBIE to know the guy’s not coasting. (Also: shoutout to THE FALL GUY, which I really liked!)

in the past ten years, Gosling's channeled Inspector Clouseau (The Nice Guys), played a quietly grieving father (First Man), made a Ken doll charismatic (Barbie), divested himself of charisma entirely to play an unexceptional replicant (Blade Runner 2049). that's not coasting.

@ReelTommyB @MuseZack Eh. Personally, as a liberal guy and a lover of ‘80s/‘90s genre cinema, I’ve accepted that I’m going to run into stuff that I disagree with politically and socially. I’ll mention it on Letterboxd as a heads-up to others, but it generally doesn’t bother me that much.

I suspect I'd share very few political beliefs in common with Norris, but this is in remarkably bad taste, especially when we're seeing a huge number of co-workers from across the political spectrum attesting to what a kind, honorable, and stand-up guy he was.

Someone should write an essay about how Carpenter's love of westerns informs his work. Of course, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 is a re-imagining of RIO BRAVO, but ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, and THEY LIVE are definitely colored by the western genre!

I'm pretty sure John Carpenter's done making movies, but I'd love to see him and Kurt Russell team up one more time! (Preferably on a western, too. Carpenter's tried to make a western on several occasions and it makes me sad that he never got to dabble in a genre he loves!)

Truth be told, I think MANNEQUIN is one of the more flawed movies on that list, along with ELECTRIC DREAMS. I still think both movies are good enough to warrant a watch, though, and I unabashedly love the others!

I miss when romcoms were willing to get weird with their concept! Along with MANNEQUIN, I’m talking about stuff like SPLASH, ELECTRIC DREAMS, DEFENDING YOIR LIFE, SO I MARRIED AN AX MURDERER, & BLAST FROM THE PAST. We need more quirky movies in general, but that includes romcoms!
