Preparing for future missions to the Red Planet's surface. The LAVA team at NASA Ames is developing a simulation tool that accurately models how a parachute inflates when deployed behind a payload moving at supersonic speed. Researchers tested and improved their approach by simulating an actual supersonic parachute flight test, the one you see here, and compared results with real-world data. This effort is helping engineers better study how these parachutes will perform on future missions to Mars and beyond. go.nasa.gov/3P6FuQI

UPS permanently retires its fleet of 27 MD-11 aircraft and take a $137 million after-tax write off instead of returning the widebody freighters to service even if they are cleared to fly again by aviation authorities following the crash of one of its planes in early November. The announcement was made by the airline during its quarterly earnings call on Jan. 27. The accelerated retirement of all its MD-11 planes follows the deadly crash of UPS Flight 2976 in Louisville on Nov. 4. The crash, which led to the deaths of 15 people, including the three person UPS crew, is the deadliest crash in the history of UPS Airlines. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families, and everyone affected," UPS CEO Carol Tomé said in the company's first earnings call since the crash. "I am incredibly proud of our team at Worldport and how they responded to this accident, and I would like to thank the Louisville community, as well as our business and industry partners, for their outpouring of support."

@TLPN_Official Thanks for helping us spread the word about Artemis II! To clarify: although Feb. 6 is the first day of Artemis II's launch window, it is not the confirmed launch date. Artemis II currently has multiple opportunities to launch from February through April.

Initial analysis from JAXA suggests the failure started at fairing separation, with abnormal accelerations measured on the payload adapter. Onboard camera's show heavy damage to the QZS-5 satellite, and it looks like they might have even lost the whole satellite at some point.

Japan's H3-F8 launch with QZS-5 unfortunately failed. During the ascent, pressure in the second stage LH2 tank was dropping (possibly due to a leak), which resulted in a late SECO and failed second burn. At this point it's unclear whether second stage/satellite is orbital.

For the first time, our Saiph thruster is being tested on a different test stand. Hope the performance numbers match or even maybe a little higher!🙂 Soon to burn in orbit, on the Vast Haven Demo spacecraft. @vast @GoToImpulse

Simulating station operations on the ground is fundamental to building Haven-1 hardware and improving flight safety. Earlier this month, we tested @GoToImpulse Saiph Thruster on our multi thruster vacuum stand. Haven Demo flew with 3 thrusters and Haven-1 will operate 48.
