Making a product open-source can be altruistic. But it can also be a competitive tactic to undercut revenue that would have flowed to the rival products. If those rivals are financially weaker, then they can't effectively compete with you. That's Meta's Llama LLM in a nutshell.

Didn't expect OpenAI to bow out of AI video creation so early. But AI video probably consumes a lot of computing resources that could be better allocated to other products. Regardless, it's now ceding the market to Adobe, Google, RunwayML, Kling AI, et al. wsj.com/tech/ai/openai…

Inside the N1.6bn UNILAG hostel that became part of crisis it was built to solve INVESTIGATION: When the N1.6B Gbajabiamila Hall was opened at @UnilagNigeria in 2024, students hoped it would ease the housing crisis. With rooms priced at N950K and bed spaces at N710K, it mirrors the cost of private hostels despite being publicly funded and maintained with taxpayers' money. This BusinessDay investigation uncovers how UNILAG turned a public intervention project into a commercial venture. The amount of money here is tiny. But the damage to journalistic credibility is huge. It creates the impression that under-the-table payments to journalists are normal in South Africa. It is not normal, and it needs to be stamped out entirely. Just say no.

[JUST IN] Natasha Phiri, SABC Political journalist, has been suspended following revelations at the Madlanga Commission she was paid R500 by Sergeant Fannie Nkosi. The money was allegedly in exchange for providing the contacts of controversial entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.

Unitree filed for a $610M IPO on the STAR Market last week. Revenue went from $23M to $248M in two years. 60% gross margins. 35% net profit. As promised, we wrote a quick take on the Unitree IPO. Unitree's cost discipline is real and we wouldn't count them out. But the gap between the hardware and the intelligence is also very real. And when we visited another humanoid maker, Kepler, in Shanghai last fall, we also learned that what makes a robot look amazing on stage is not what makes it useful in a factory. Different design priorities entirely. I personally don't think any of these stops the stock from going parabolic in the short term, but longer term, it's got its work cut out.

If there is a status attached to height – and there is – then 5ft 11in doesn’t quite measure up. Six foot is manly, commanding. Five-11 is acceptable, unremarkable. But a near-miss. It’s the upper end of almost, the FT's Alex Bilmes writes. ft.trib.al/Cy2ronS

Moniepoint didn’t buy Orda for payments. While that is the obvious read, I think it only scratches the surface. Moniepoint already processes about ₦8 billion a day at Nigerian restaurants. Annualised, that is roughly ₦2.92 trillion—just 0.71% of the ₦412 trillion it processed
