It’s Volunteer Week! Volunteers played a major part in our origin story. In 1984, founder Dr. Bob Simon led a group of volunteers who trained Afghan civilians as medics so they could treat people in their communities. Today, our volunteers still provide emergency medical care.

Nine-month-old Amar received treatment for severe malnutrition from our nutrition team in Ethiopia. His family received cash assistance to buy nutritious food and get Anmar to his follow-up visits. Through consistent follow-up and quality care, Amar recovered.

What happens when giving birth safely depended on where you live? In Mali, we’re training midwives with the aim of reducing maternal and newborn deaths. The result: Health workers at 10 community health centres learned basic and emergency obstetric and neonatal care.
