German @Umweltbundesamt, usually very critical of everything related to CCS, did an in-depth sector analysis of EU Commission's net-zero scenarios and finds: Without CCS, industry won't be decarbonised. This is how they frame the result: umweltbundesamt.de/sites/default/…

@SomersJulian @bataille_chris The remaining 5% needs to be recovered through negative emission technology (biological or otherwise). The assumption is the baseline is zero emissions (achievable only by shutting down the activity and removing the product from the economy). The baseline is the current case.

@bataille_chris But how do you think the remaining 5% should be addressed? (Btw, congrats on the great catalyst podcast on CCS, and nice to put a voice to the countless tweets and papers of yours I’ve read over the last years)

A quiet reminder CCS does nothing for your upstream fugitive methane emissions if you’re using coal to make steel.

@CBCNews @EvanDyerCBC A missed point is that producers minimize the CO2 stored during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) because they buy the CO2. If there is credit for CO2 storage, it can become economic to store more CO2 than the produced oil would emit.

The recent federal budget promised tax credits for carbon capture projects. Depending on who's asked, the technology is either a weapon against climate change — or an energy sector stalling tactic. cbc.ca/1.6003427 @EvanDyerCBC

There is no wait and see in the paper. It’s more the opposite: go harder now with safe bets and don’t count on that magical yet far off tech to save us.
Industrial Climate Solutions Inc.@IndClimSol

@enviroeconomics Thanks, Dave. One clarification - if "We need to take the time to better understand the wildcards" means. "Let's wait and see if something better comes along before we take action." I would strongly disagree.

This is a beast of a report, but so is the net zero challenge. It’s all about safe bets, technologies we can double down on now, and wildcards, which are disruptive, uncertain, and often competing substitutes. We need to take the time to better understand the wildcards.

For Canada, reaching #NetZero is achievable and could be advantageous. Strong policy and strategic choices can get us there. Find out more in our detailed scenario report: Canada’s Net Zero Future. #cdnpoli climatechoices.ca/reports/canada…

@bataille_chris @ProjectLEILAC Hey, Chris - The Brevik cement planet uses exclusively alternative/waste fuels. It not only improves emissions footprint, but it also saves money. I understand that for a couple of years, their fuel cost was negative! Why? Imported corpses of prion-infected cattle from the UK!

I applaud this effort, but in the long run I think we’re going to better off with aggressive demand reduction & material efficiency for cement & concrete, CCS on the limestone calcination (60%, eg @ProjectLEILAC), and alternative fuels for kiln heat. oecd.org/greengrowth/GG…

Both CCS and low carbon hydrogen are key to the green recovery. It's @KwasiKwarteng at @The_CCSA #ccus2020 "The broad public doesn't know enough about CCS. Let's start with the basics. The main thing we have to do is explain what carbon capture is & why it's necessary."
