I read something like this and I think: Some of us have been so focused on their authoritarianism and abuse of power and lawless that we’ve perhaps neglected to point out the additional fact that these are also just terrible humans—lacking class, grace, kindness or dignity.

Supreme Court today: We'll allow Alabama Republicans to change the congressional map in the primary election even though absentee voting has literally already started Supreme Court last December: November's too late to strike down the GOP's map in TX's March primary election!!

The decision marks a significant and terrifying moment in our democracy as the court allowed an election to be cancelled after its completion.

Once again, gerrymandering that centers white people is A-OK but gerrymandering that centers a broad base of voters is not. Absurd.

Jeff Landry has been the chief law enforcement officer of Louisiana for over a decade — eight years as AG, three as governor. We are still ranked #50 in crime. The governor stood at a podium today after a mass shooting at the Mall of Louisiana and offered nothing but the same failed playbook. More jails. More Angola. More dog whistles. At some point the record has to speak louder than the rhetoric. The data is clear — Jeff Landry’s policies cost us more money and they don’t make us safer. I am praying for every family impacted by this act of violence and all the violence across our state. Too many families are carrying this grief because our leaders choose to be reactive instead of proactive. Notice I’m not focused on his dog whistles and racism — that’s what he wants. His policies are far more racist than his rhetoric. Talk about how he’s failed as a leader. That’s how we remove him next year. Share if you care 🦾

Reading the entire Bible and broadcasting it to the entire nation while actively taking food, healthcare, clean water, clean air, shelter, due process, and basic human dignity away from people is the exact kind of religious hypocrisy Jesus raged against.

No amount of reading the Bible publicly can compensate for a heart that is committed to hate.

A reminder while Republicans bitch about Democrats finishing the redistricting fight that they started: they’ve got full control of government— they can pass a law banning partisan gerrymandering any time they want to. They won’t. Republicans aren’t mad that gerrymandering exists; they’re mad that they’re not the only ones using it.

If Dave Chappelle didn't expect his trans "jokes" to be weaponized by Republicans as hate speech and policy, he's the most oblivious person on the planet. But the thing is... Chappelle isn't oblivious. He's highly intelligent and perceptive. He knows exactly what he's doing. The most f*cked up aspect of this is the "DoorDash grandma" t-shirt she's wearing, and the implications of this: I checked and this is a pre-organized PR stunt between DoorDash and the White House (they boast about it on their website: about.doordash.com/en-us/news/das…). The lady - Sharon Simmons, "a grandmother of ten" who has "completed more than 14,000 deliveries" - isn't even from DC, they brought her over from Arkansas as a prop for this. Think about just how uniquely rotten things need to be in order for this to happen. She is literally a grandmother relying on gig work because she can't afford healthcare for her husband's stage-3 cancer. She doesn't even get paid a living wage and needs to rely on tips. And as an "independent contractor," she gets no benefits, no healthcare, no retirement. Which means she is an almost perfect illustration of the failure of the American social contract on almost every level: healthcare, labor rights, retirement, wages, etc. Any decent human being looking at her story - let alone policymakers - should feel only one thing: shame. Yet DoorDash and the White House looked at this woman and saw a photo op. They flew her from Arkansas, branded her "DoorDash grandma" and used her as a mascot for a tax tweak - no tax on tips - that wouldn't even begin to cover her husband's chemo sessions. Watching the actual video of her "delivery" to Trump (pbs.org/newshour/polit…) is almost unreal. Trump opens up by saying, smiling at the camera, "who says it looks staged? It doesn't." They immediately proceed to do a joint press conference to a bunch of journalists who were conveniently standing right there. None of the questions that follow during the next 15 minutes are related to Simmons' situation who just stands there. Journalists, the President, and cameras all obsessing over culture wars and the actual war in Iran, while the walking embodiment of the country's deepest structural failures - healthcare, labor, retirement - stands silently in a corporate t-shirt, unmentioned and too uncomfortable to confront.
