I actually saw this happen once. A wargame designer of my acquaintance (a really good guy) was also a card-carrying Communist. Literally - as in he belonged to the Party. He'd come by it honestly, as his parents were Wobblies back in the day (International Workers of the World members). He used to have little essays in his (great) wargames about how Brezhnev fought in World War Two, so he was morally superior to Carter. That sort of thing.
Anyway, in 1991, when the USSR fell, he stopped being Communist. His actual words were, "The Russians ought to know. If they say Communism was a failure, I believe them." Of course he stayed pretty far left, but the actual Marxism left his body.
I remember reading all the educated idiots in newspaper columns back then trying to explain how Communism, the predestined wave of the future had only "seemed" to fail, and thinking. "Man this one hard-core Commie could see the facts, and you guys can't."
