تورانیان باستان با قبایل ایرانیزبانِ استپهای آسیای مرکزی مانند ساکاها، ماساژتها و سرمتها انطباق دارند. نامهای تورانی در شاهنامه (مانند افراسیاب، پیران) همگی ریشههای زبانی ایرانی دارند، نه ترکی.
اگر از یک تاریخنگار بپرسید، میگوید تورانیان همان استپ نشین های ایرانی تبار بودند.
در زمان فردوسی، منطقه «توران» (ماوراءالنهر) کاملاً تحت سلطه ترکان قرار گرفته بود و نام توران با ترکستان مترادف شده بود. دلیل مترادف گرفته شدن "توران" با "ترکستان" از همینجا ناشی شده است
