Nobody talks about this enough: one of the most important hires on a low-budget film is the first AD. A great 1st AD keeps the day moving, shields the director from chaos, manages the energy of 30 people at 6 AM, and makes sure you go home with the shots you needed. Hire the best one you can afford. Everything else falls into place. Everyone needs to be on point and prepared for their piece. The First AD is the orchestrator.
