He’s just walking and every single one of his teammates falls in line behind him without even thinking about it. That’s not captaincy, that’s not seniority, that’s reverence. These are world class players in their own right. Internationally capped, club legends, ego and pride built from years of fighting for that shirt and yet when Messi walks out of that tunnel, none of them question who leads. You don’t have to be a Messi fan to see this for what it is. It’s impressive, plain and simple. And when a team has zero ego, when everyone genuinely falls behind one man without resentment, that’s not just a nice story, that’s a performance advantage. Unity like that wins matches. 🔁

There was a boy in Abidjan with a fake jersey and a marker, writing “RONALDO 7” on the back because that’s all he could afford. He grew up in a house with 25 people in it. No TV time of his own, so he’d pretend to be asleep, then sneak into the room after midnight and watch football with the volume turned down to almost nothing. Just him, in the dark, dreaming. At 9 years old, they sent him away to an academy near the Ghana border. He was so far from home, so hungry, that he and the other kids used to raid the village for potatoes just to eat. Boiled potatoes with a bit of oil, to this day, it’s still his favorite meal. His sister Roxane was the one who believed before anyone else did. She was 10 years old, already acting like his agent, telling the other kids in the neighborhood to keep training because “Yan isn’t buying you cars.” Then came the trials. Bournemouth. Chelsea. Rangers. Olympiacos. Crystal Palace. Door after door closed. Even MLS academy teams passed on him. His visa ran out, and he was sent back to Ivory Coast with nothing. A few weeks later, Leganés gave him a chance. He made his debut at 18, against Real Madrid. And then the call came. Roxane was gone. Fifteen years old. Taken at a party, with suspicion of someone poisoning her drink, in circumstances he still doesn’t have answers for. He says he hasn’t really felt anything since, just numb. But he kept playing for her. Sent almost everything he earned back home, lived in a room at the training ground with no TV, because football was the only thing he wanted anymore. When he moved to RB Leipzig, he started showing up 90 minutes early to everything, so early the squad nicknamed him “The German.” Now he’s at the World Cup, wearing the Côte d’Ivoire shirt, following Drogba, Yaya, Gervinho.
