In this episode, we take a byway from science, history, data, and personality to explore the host’s own experience. Every reasonable person who documents metaphysical or paranormal phenomena stands wary of the hour when he or she is asked: what experiences have you had? My answer: not many. I do not collect or seek experiences. I wonder, sometimes, as William James did, whether possessing a hyper-rational or over-analytic mind deters them. I am transparent about my beliefs because I write as participant-chronicler. But not everyone who writes on belief or parapsychology (the two differ) need be. In that vein, I'm inspired by @UVA's Ian Stevenson, M.D. (1918-2007), author of Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation (1966), et al. Asked by a reporter in 2002 the typical question about his eschatology, Stevenson replied: "My beliefs should make no difference to anyone." There's a time and place for testimony. But in our era of over-disclosure (and sometimes disclosure substituting for excellence), I find Stevenson's indifference refreshing. He's among the many parapsychologists profiled in my upcoming pod Extraordinary Evidence: ESP Is Real, launching Oct. 30.
