Since Comic Relief started in 1985, child poverty has increased from 20% to 30%. We don't need charity, we need system change.

143 years since Marx passed away. "The worker becomes poorer the more wealth he produces." Record profits. Record hunger. Wars for markets and minerals. Public systems gutted. His scalpel cuts deeper every year. The task remains unfinished.

Karl Marx died #OnThisDay in 1883. Together with Friedrich Engels, he is considered the founder of historical materialism, a theory that was to gain great influence in the international workers’ movement. Marx’s “Capital” still inspires critical minds around the world today.

Marc Garrett: Feral Class. Review by Morgan Quaintance. Art Monthly. March 2026. "Marc Garrett’s Feral Class is a rough-and-tumble memoir of the artist [...] a defiant two-finger salute to the sanctity of staid professional orthodoxy." @ArtMonthly @minorcomps #books #art

"never fall into those vulgar, banal moods, pessimism and optimism. My own state of mind synthesises these two: my mind is pessimistic, but my will is optimistic. Since I never build up illusions, I am seldom disappointed" - Antonio Gramsci

@JennyAThatcher of her shoes — really old-fashioned ones —mum made me wear wear them. I was so embarrassed. When the kids at school made fun of them, I lied and said they were from Ravels — a trendy shoe shop at the time. No one believed me

@JennyAThatcher Remember my mum putting cardboard in my shoes when I was in primary and secondary school. We were so poor that sometimes new shoes weren’t an option. In secondary school, I desperately needed a new pair, but we couldn’t afford them. The old lady who lived downstairs gave me pair

When I was a kid at primary school - (moving to Wales to London) - I had holes in my shoes. I dad (before he started drug dealing) used to cut pieces of carboard out & insert them into my shoes 😭 There was a another kid there in my class with holes in his shoes...

@szczels Exactly! our democracy is mostly symbolic because cultural and institutional power is held by an Oxbridge cohort who have no material incentive to let it go. Pointing out inequity doesn’t threaten them cos their system is designed 2 absorb criticism without changing who benefits.

@J_ClassCulture We are about to lose our democracy, flawed as it is... but the relation between working class culture and its denial, and 'democracy' is unclear... the Oxbridge cohort that manage culture in their own image, are not going to vacate their plum jobs when inequity is pointed out!

People working in the worst, most monotonous and least rewarding jobs in the country have a far better understanding of what the country needs, than some hereditary Oxford loafer lord whose only relationship with labour is paying for it. It's time the working class was heard!

Yes, let’s have a kebab shop owner as the Minister for Defence and a cleaner as the Home Secretary. We are not a serious country.
