So a little late to the party here, but as an aspiring high school umpire, I have some thoughts about this. I think that the automated system is a GREAT idea in theory and is AMAZING as a teaching tool. Do I think it is great in its current live MLB implementation format? Absolutely not. Why? Because while I am a data guy and I am all for accountability of calling the game correctly, I think it is going to force A LOT of umpires to leave the game, even of they aren't forced out because of their performance. That is going to exacerbate the already HUGE issue of having a lack of umpires for the game. It may not have an immediate affect on the amount of MLB officials available, but I GUARANTEE that it will affect the quality of those officials if there is a mass exodus in the sport. It will almost certanly affect the quality of every level underneath it. I am all for technology helping and augmenting the game, because I struggle with the down and away pitches myself, but human error has always been a part of the game, from all three teams on the field. As a purist, I think that is part of what makes this game so loved and amazing for so long. It isn't perfect because we are not perfect. If you try to quantify and measure everything, while it will certainly be helpful in the short run, it will likely ruin the sport in the long run. Sure change is important to enhance relvance, but too much change provides the opportunity to ruin the sport entirely. We need to walk that fine line very carefully.
