Where would the proposed EFL sanctions leave Sheffield Wednesday in terms of being in any way competitive next season..? Henrik Pedersen: #SWFC🦉

There are increasing reports, echoed by @AlanBiggs1, that the David Storch consortium has submitted a higher bid for Sheffield Wednesday than Mike Ashley. That creates a dilemma for the administrators. Their legal duty is clear. They must maximise returns for creditors. But football clubs are not normal businesses. The buyer also needs the financial strength to stabilise and rebuild the club. I have said repeatedly that Sheffield Wednesday requires at least £100 million of investment almost immediately. Not over time. Not through hopeful projections. Real capital. Against that backdrop, some of the commentary circulating recently is frankly absurd. Stories of £4 million being spent on the stadium and safe standing at the Leppings Lane end miss the scale of the problem entirely. That kind of money barely scratches the surface of what is required to modernise Hillsborough and rebuild the club properly. Mike Ashley may not be everyone’s preferred owner, but two things are undeniable. He has the cash. And he has the commercial leverage. It is worth remembering that Ashley reportedly explored a bid for Meadowhall last year. If someone with that scale of retail and property experience were involved in the area, it is not difficult to imagine a completely different vision. A modern stadium integrated with transport access, parking and surrounding commercial development across that vast footprint. Whether that specific idea ever happens is beside the point. The point is scale. There is no comparison between a bid backed by real financial firepower and one built on optimism and future promises. Sheffield Wednesday has suffered enough from the latter. For the sake of the long-suffering supporters, one hopes the administrators eventually follow the line often attributed to Churchill: “You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have exhausted all the other possibilities.” Let’s hope we are close to that moment. #swfc
