Remember: it’s not enough to remove the negative. That simply creates a void. Get the positive things on the calendar ASAP, lest they get crowded out by the bullshit and noise that will otherwise fill your days.

4/ It loves you in the most exhausting way possible

3/ It can’t tell the difference between embarrassment and actual danger

Your inner voice isn’t trying to destroy your confidence. It’s not the one-upper person who’s trying to keep you down. It just feels safer when you’re not putting yourself out there in the world where you can get hurt. Here’s why:

The inner voice is not lying to you on purpose. It genuinely believes the thing you’re excited about is going to kill you. Cut it some slack. Things it genuinely thinks will kill you: 1.Posting that thing you wrote 2.Telling someone about your idea before it’s perfect 3.Being seen before you’re ready 4.Succeeding and then having to keep succeeding 5.Failing in front of people who believe in you

5/ It shows up when you're actually doing well. This is its favorite shift. Things are going good, you're feeling it, momentum is building, and it shows up to make sure that doesn't get out of hand. Easssyyyy, big fella.

4/ It shows up on your days off. You're trying to do nothing. You've earned nothing. It pulls up a chair, crosses its legs, notepad out, and starts listing everything you should probably be doing instead.

The inner voice doesn't take days off. Doesn't call in sick. Doesn't respect weekends. Truly the most dedicated employee I never asked for. Here's where I've seen it show up in my life. Maybe you can relate:

Start to take note of when it shows up in your life. It may be hard to locate at first, but keep looking. It’s there.

5/ It asks you who you think you are. Not out loud. Just as a general feeling that sits on your chest while you’re trying to do the thing. No specific accusation. Just a vibe.
