Dispiriting is low voter turnout, the loss of good public reps and the general outcome of the election. The realisation of a likely "more of the same" from the next Govt is the dispiriting part.

And make no mistake, the Govt is still legislating against dancing. Our embarrassing 1935 Public Dance Halls Act is on a par with New York's now repealed 1926 Cabaret Law - that targeted minorities, Black music and public entertainment (incl dancing). We still have not repealed.

A 20,000 cap Irish dance festival has sold out in two hours - well done @District8Dublin - the obvious demand for dance events isn't served by the dwindling amount of dance venues here. Stop legislating against dancing + reform the laws! @FineGael @fiannafailparty @greenparty_ie

If Govt can't get this legislation in by summer then something has gone seriously amiss. A small "bespoke" piece of legislation as the Taoiseach refers to it, a fraction of the draft that was published 16 months ago, and still no time for publication in sight? #whereisthenight

Separately, with ongoing uncertainty re: licensing, very few operators or potential operators are investing in spaces, all as building costs continue to rise and insurance premiums stay prohibitively expensive. Govt must do something for the sector in this budget. #giveusthenight

The SEO system prevents short notice bookings, incl. private parties, potential sell-out shows etc. It also discourages risk-taking on smaller shows and acts (a key function of the night-time economy), which reduces activity and employment. SEOs Gotta Go

Government's epic delay to reform licensing means that venues are continuing to be charged outrageous "Special Exemption Order" costs, and must still nominate the nights they'll open a month in advance. We're asking for these costs to be removed entirely in the forthcoming budget
