This is me. I was an IELTS instructor, materials developer, EAP teacher on a Shanghai-based platform for 7 years, and that's how I developed an interest in privacy, #DataProtection, cybercrime. I didn't know my face was on the China main page until 2019, even though I had...

I'm going to spend the next few days tweeting MAXIMUM CANADA, because I think there should be more attention focused on the challenges of planning for growth to make it sustainable and ecological while solving Canada's problems of underpopulation.

@rodjnaquin Yep. I wrote carefully scaffolded model texts for IELTS General Training letters. No one else was doing that. Students loved them. Same with teaching syntax to build up from ‘naked nouns’ to complex NPs. But I am in Ontario, where we aren’t allowed to be excellent teachers.

I was curious to see what this paper by Kyun, Kalyuga, and Sweller said about using worked examples to teach literary essay writing, and the biggest takeaway is simple: show complete model essays way more often during whole-class instruction. The research found that studying full examples actually reduces mental overload for struggling students—it's not "giving away the answer," it's teaching them what good writing looks like. Display 2-3 complete model responses to the same prompt on the board and have the whole class annotate them together. Show multiple strong responses that take different positions on the same text, then discuss what makes each one work—specific evidence, clear reasoning, good organization—even though they reach different conclusions. This teaches students what quality looks like across different interpretations, not just one "right" answer. Right after studying examples together, assign a really similar practice task with the same text. The research showed students did best when the practice closely matched what they just studied. So if you analyze symbolism examples in Chapter 3 as a class, have everyone immediately practice symbolism in Chapter 5—not characterization, not a different book. Transfer takes forever, so you need way more repetition with similar tasks before expecting kids to apply these skills elsewhere. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

My blog explains that during real conversation, our brains automatically sync up—we predict what others will say and align our language with theirs. This is why genuine understanding requires back-and-forth dialogue, not just clear emails or presentations. I argue that how educators talk with each other directly shapes student learning, yet most receive no training in professional dialogue. Better conversations among teachers lead to better thinking and teaching. open.substack.com/pub/rodjnaquin…

Sounds like the Peterborough Diocese in Ontario, which is deeply sick at the level of the entrenched conservative enclave that “has the police in their pockets” according to now-resigned Bishop Robert Bourgon.

Religious Sisters Accused of Abuse: The abuse of religious sisters by senior colleagues is a kind of spiritual and vocational abuse that is also found in high schools, where sisters have sometimes abused girls as a way to introduce them to religious life. bishop-accountability.org/documents-accu…

In faith communities where harm has occurred, it can be tempting to focus on creating a redemptive story, but we must remember that redemption isn’t possible or beautiful if it’s built on the backs of the ones who are harmed.

@Tracking_Power @antaliyana3 Horrifying to watch. The complicity and coverup(wilfully destroying files) is shocking. These boys and their families deserved justice, after 50+years of agonising never ending pain not even an apology just denials. Sickening

If you haven't watched this stunning film yet - which was commissioned and then censored by the BBC - you should. Available to stream at the link below. Kincora is a major story, not just confined to the Question of Ireland. The role of the British intelligence agencies and indeed the connections to the Royals (Mountbatten in particular - yes the grand-uncle of (not)Prince Andrew), should interest all of us, and make us think about how Kincora relates to the child sexual abuse networks in the UK and - of course via Andrew and Peter 'Mossad' Mandelson - how it relates to the Epstein networks. It's important in my view also to remember the heroic role that an Ulster Protestant - who was also a Unionist - played in getting this story out. Colin Wallace worked in dirty tricks for the British intelligence services with a cover role in Army HQ in Lisburn. He suffered more than most in his determination to get the story of Kincora into public view - including being fitted up for manslaughter and spending years inside. We should all be publicly very grateful to him. I know I am. Thank you, Colin. A link to a clip of Colin Wallace on this issues is in the replies. @Luke_172 @NCRonline I was attending a session a few months ago and there was as tension between the leader and the SNAP manager, both volunteers. Why? I think online gatherings are not secure. It isn’t safe, and SNAP can’t afford the insurance. Board members would be personally liable.

I've never heard someone hold her immoral past against her. I admire her personal moral life after her conversion. My concern would be some of her political associations after her conversion, and some political views that seem to be incompatible with Catholic social teaching. (Also the fact that the CW movement seems to have borne little lasting fruit, they mostly seem to be dissenting progressives now)

People like to defame Dorothy Day by speaking of a supposedly “scandalous” past- but those same people would never dare say that about St Augustine, Francis or Ignatius.Somehow men are held to a different level of sanctity

@kevin_ahern Never heard that at all. Her critics think many of her political views were terrible and destructive. Do you have an example in mind? Some randos on X, I suppose?

12/I am #Catholic. understand the urge to look away. Ambition is a poor reason for sacrificing justice. #Catholics continue, every day, to abandon the survivors/victims of #Catholic clergy child rape & sex abuse in ways small and large.

@HannahWardEdu That said, the SOR is helping enormously. As just one example, I don't try to convince Ss that knowing the IPA is necessary. Canadian vowels are a bit different but most books, sites use only US/UK. My Ss end up sounding Canadian so created my own materials, a mix of old & new.

@HannahWardEdu Yes. I have used oral grammar transformation drills to develop automaticity, esp advanced structures Ss hadn't practised or even been presented with. They LOVED it. Much of Ss loved were tried and true things from my DTEFLA that, one on one, I finally had time to implement.
