@ChrisDipperBoyd Thanks. Chinery says that Great DB has yellow border to pronotum (thorax plate) - not very clear in pic I sent you but just detectable in the following two shots that I took in fading light. Perhaps it had swum up the roadside gutter and clambered out when mud got too thick.

@ChrisDipperBoyd hi Chris - I noticed this beetle - pretty large - on the mudddy edge of the road on Sunday eve as I walked back to the Hickling carpark. Unsure if it had met with a mishap but you can see the muddy elytra. Nothing quite like it in Chinery. Any thoughts?

@GlenOrioleglen If you have both ends of the egg, predation seems likely. I wonder if, therefore, it is the blue egg of a Heron brown-stained from the nest lining. The rounded, rather than pointed, shape also fits this theory. A photo also showing a 20p piece is a great help with the size.
