This weekend marks my final trip to Nashville for class at Vanderbilt University a.k.a. — the “Harvard of the South.” Nearly four years ago, at 42 years old and while serving as a sitting university president, I made the decision to go back to school and pursue the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Policy & Leadership at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College. Truth be told… this journey has cost me A LOT! Balancing presidential leadership and doctoral scholarship at the same time has been the most demanding season of my life — physically and mentally. But here we are… (barely lol) almost at the finish line. My dissertation capstone defense is scheduled for April 17, 2026, and prayerfully in May I will officially be conferred the degree of Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Policy & Leadership. This weekend closes the chapter on nearly four years of classes, cohort sessions, and countless Nashville trips. And for the first time in four years… I might actually get to have a summer. 😂😂 Let’s finish strong. #LetsGetIt
