Nigerian men plan surprises, send money “just because”, write long messages, travel across cities for love, buy gifts, beg when they offend, and still get called “not romantic.” Meanwhile many Nigerian women think romance is just receiving flowers, money, attention, dates but rarely doing the same in return. In Nigeria, men are expected to perform romance, while women are expected to receive romance. The real question is: if Nigerian men stopped doing all the romantic gestures today, would most relationships survive?
