Heartbreaking. Not just an intellectual giant but a kind and generous human being. Show me anyone in this building, this entire field, who was not better off for having crossed paths with Fred Schauer. law.virginia.edu/news/202409/me…

A true giant has passed. RIP Fred Schauer—the most generous and thoughtful of colleagues

Fred Schauer Has Passed, lsolum.typepad.com/legaltheory/20…: It is with a heavy heart that I report that Fred Schauer passed yesterday, Sunday, the first of September, 2024.  I have known Fred for almost forty years. At the very beginning of my academic career, Fred provided comments on my very first law review--an act of great kindness and intellectual generosity.  One of my most important scholarly projects, the development of virtue jurisprudence, originated with a paper I wrote that responded to a paper of Fred's. Throughout my career, I have consulted Fred's work again and again on multitudinous topics. He is one of the greats, a scholarly giant and a wonderful human being.  He is irreplaceable and his loss is a heavy blow that will be felt far beyond the University of Virginia.

RIP to Fred Schauer, beloved colleague and friend, who died peacefully at his home yesterday evening. The David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia, Fred was an extraordinary scholar and teacher as well as the loving husband of Barbara Spellman, Professor of Law and Psychology at UVA. Fred's death is a great loss to his family, friends, the University of Virginia and the wider scholarly community. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. @UVALaw @UVA #Philosophy

A devastating loss. Fred pursued the truth with a smile, while helping others along the way. Thank you, Fred.

One of the most fun papers I've worked on, examining a range of language models, trying to understand broad historical trends in jurisprudence from Reconstruction to the present. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

@khickmanjd @jbh502 I'm not endorsing attacking anyone. These people didn't choose to be named in the complaint. But I would personally make a much stronger statement if my name were used in a complaint attacking other scholars in such an odious way.

@khickmanjd @jbh502 Eugene Volokh is quoted in the WP: “It will be interesting to see what, if anything, this lawsuit uncovers. But on that, I’ll be a spectator just like everyone else.” If he wasn't quoted fairly, he certainly has access to social media. washingtonpost.com/education/2024…

Has the Court ever issued any majority opinions with dissents (or concurrences) to follow later? The only somewhat analogous situation I can think of is Ex Parte Quirin, where the Court announced its judgment, with the opinion to follow later. @WilliamBaude @steve_vladeck

@sandeepvaheesan Where did it talk about "secret shoppers" monitoring compliance with the scheme? I didn't see that in the link.
