ROHHAD syndrome (Rapid-onset Obesity with Hypothalamic dysfunction, Hypoventilation, and Autonomic Dysregulation) is an extremely rare, life-threatening pediatric disorder of unknown cause. It typically starts with rapid weight gain in early childhood (1.5–7 years), followed by central hypoventilation, hormone imbalances, autonomic issues, and often neural crest tumors. Globally, fewer than 200 cases have been documented worldwide since 1965, with a mortality rate of 50–60% if undiagnosed/untreated, mainly due to cardiorespiratory arrest. No cure exists yet, but international efforts (like the ROHHAD International Consortium) and ongoing research into autoimmunity, epigenetics, and more are bringing hope. In Japan, it’s ultra-rare — only about 30 reported patients. Families, through 一般社団法人ROHHAD JAPAN, are working hard on awareness, support, and pushing for designation as a specified intractable disease to improve access to care. Early diagnosis and vigilant respiratory support can save lives. Let’s raise awareness for these brave children and their families💜 #ROHHAD #RareDisease
