Whether religious, nationalist, genderist or a combination, cults are like drugs. They distort reality. People get hooked and act irrationally. Rehab is hard.

While I understand Joanna’s point, and it is helpful for others to now speak out, I can’t avoid my deep disappointment that so many SNP MPs lacked the courage to stand up and be counted. Not just on this, but on many other issues where they looked the other way when those of us prepared to speak up were mercilessly hounded, harassed and bullied. There is no place for cowardice in public office.

I’m glad that Tommy has spoken out on this. Better late than never and to be fair the reality is that had he spoken out before he would have found himself the subject of bullying & smears. It’s this sort of behaviour at the top of our politics that merits an independent inquiry.

Not sure an ex-FM saying this will be appreciated by Police Scotland. Basically anyone who is now sat before them can credibly refuse to cooperate and give this excuse and then write to them afterwards. That then cannot be taken as not cooperating fully with the police.

@Honeythedog1 @anthoharris Seven hours is a long time, but there was a very big list of items to ask about. The dramatisation of the interview will need to be a bit selective obvs, probably just asking about the funny haha and funny peculiar stuff. “Are these sloggi pants yours or Peter's?” “No comment”

@DeanMThomson And by the 30th, Colin Beattie had supposedly been reappointed as Treasurer (because otherwise it would have been Sturgeon), but I don't think Swinney mentioned that either (it wasn't stated publicly until the 17th, AFAIK, three days before Murrell's loan was supposedly given).

7/So by the time Swinney spoke to the BBC on 30 May 2021, the public record showed: — Three finance committee members gone — National Treasurer gone, citing legal obstruction — Senior NEC member gone, citing constitutional failures — Accounts with visible anomalies — Police Scotland assessing a formal complaint And he didn't understand.

3/Chapman's role wasn't ceremonial. Under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, the National Treasurer is legally responsible for keeping proper accounting records and ensuring party finances comply with the law. He was saying he couldn't do that. Because he was being blocked.

@sharrond62 @MillieFiore Either she trusted him implicitly, and despite concerns and warnings, could not conceive that something might be amiss, which was stupid; or she suppressed scrutiny and dissent regardless of the possibility of crimes and misdemeanors, which makes her complicit, and not a victim.

No-one is questioning her role as a wife. Every serious commentator is questioning her role as a politician who closed down debate on a black hole in the accounts while the party’s chief executive was plundering its funds and filling her house - and showering her with - the loot.
The Herald@heraldscotland

Nicola Sturgeon has questions to answer - but only as a politician, not as a wife || Neil Mackay "Nobody knows what goes on inside a marriage, apart from the couple in question. "Once behind closed doors, we can never be sure about how others live, the nature of their love or lack thereof, or how they navigate life’s most complex maze: the messy business of the human heart. "I became deeply uneasy with the group-think which appeared to engulf much of Scotland, particularly among those who have always disliked - ‘hated’ may be a better word - Sturgeon. "When a crowd gangs up on someone, it is never a pleasant sight, even if - and I stress ‘if’ - that person is in the wrong. "However, as time went on, what troubled me most was the notion that Sturgeon must have known of Murrell’s wrongdoing because they were married. They’ve since separated. "It’s initially very easy to think that - as Sturgeon herself admitted this week. But such thinking is problematic. "Why should any woman be responsible for the crimes of her husband? Why should any man be responsible for the crimes of his wife? Why should anyone carry the can for their partner’s sins? "They shouldn’t. And to make it so for Sturgeon means it must be so for you or I. "I spent the first half of my career - which now runs to a long 35 years - as a crime reporter. "I never saw any woman or man have to take responsibility for offences their partner had committed, unless they were alongside them in the dock. "Nor can we know the mechanics of any marriage. My wife and I don’t monitor what each other spends. We certainly don’t go through each other’s credit card statements. To do so, would seem rather controlling. "Certainly, we can be offended by our politicians living such gilded lifestyles that they are oblivious to expensive goods turning up at their door, but that doesn’t equate to ‘she must have known what he was up to’. "It equates to a woman living a spoilt and privileged life. Is it understandable that many consider it odd she knew so little about Murrell’s spending? Yes. Does that hang her? No. "On the mechanics of marriages again: who knows how this couple lived? Who can guess at the nature of their relationship, what they talked about, how much time they spent together, whether they confided in each other? "All these issues rightly remain secret. To wish to uncover such intimacies - to expect anyone to expose the raw meat of their marriage to the public - is unsettling." 👇 𝘐𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌: 𝘏𝘢𝘺 𝘍𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭
