The primary purpose of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is not to restart the heart, as many people think.
When the heart stops, there is usually still a small amount of oxygenated blood circulating within the chest and major vessels. CPR works by manually pumping the heart, creating enough blood flow to deliver oxygen to vital organs especially the brain.
This process buys time.
It keeps tissues alive long enough for trained professionals to intervene with defibrillation, advanced airway support, and medications that can actually restore a sustainable heartbeat.
So when performing chest compressions, understand the real goal:
Maintain circulation and preserve life until definitive care arrives.
Knowing the intent helps set the right expectations and encourages people to act decisively rather than hesitating.
