Renowned poet Abel Mauchi has made a herb garden on a dwala. He is helping to conserve many traditional herbs from the wild; the kind of herbs that have medicinal properties. He is convinced that we all stand to lose if we allow the herbs to go extinct. youtube.com/watch?v=zLF42K…

Animals and birds also feed on these fruits, with the Mushavhi berries being a juicy meal for birds. In many areas, the Muchakata tree is treated with mystic reverence, and this has aided conservation. Their dried seeds are edible, nutritious nuts. #conservation

These indigenous fruit trees are precious. In many areas, traditional leaders can fine you heavily if you cut them down. Muchakata, Mushavhi and Mutamba fruits help to fight extreme hunger especially in times of droughts.

But due to such factors as climate change, some of these species are disappearing before any research can be made to ascertain their possible commercial value. We might not notice all this because we are too busy with 'more important' issues of our lives. enviropresszim.com

One village elder has told us that all these indigenous plant species have enormous potential as medicines, processed food, animal feed, pesticides, insecticides etc. They constitute an important part of the biodiversity of our natural environment (flora and fauna).....

We can cut down some firewood for domestic use, but it's illegal to trade in firewood without a permit. The Forestry Commission suspended the issuance of the permits to fight deforestation. Some indigenous tree species being cut down take up to 100 and more years to fully mature
