I was delighted to witness an incredible moment of leadership transition at the 101st District Conference of Rotary District 9214 at Speke Resort Munyonyo, where Governor Christine Kyeyune Kawooya handed over the mantle to the incoming Governor, Daniel Mukasa Ddamulira. Rotarians continue to bring this difference to life. Through service, commitment, and care, we demonstrate our duty to support families, friends, and communities. No one should be ignored, especially in moments where life itself depends on our action. I applaud Madam Governor Christine for her theme: “Together, One Act at a Time.” Let us continue to appreciate the small acts of kindness and celebrate the positive impact we bring into the lives of others. Even the smallest effort can make the world a better place. I once again congratulate Governor Christine upon the successful completion of her term, and I wish Governor Daniel Ddamulira a successful tenure.

MUASA Position The Makerere University Academic Staff Association, MUASA, represents academic staff at Makerere University. @MuasaFraternity is concerned that the proposed Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026 could negatively affect universities, academic staff, and the future of research in Uganda. Our concern is not political. It is professional and institutional. Universities exist to teach, research, question, test ideas, and generate knowledge for society. Any law that makes normal academic work risky, including collaboration, policy critique, public discussion, and access to research funding, weakens the institutions that help a country solve problems. A country that fears its thinkers eventually runs out of solutions. Sovereignty is not protected by silencing knowledge. The leadership of the Uganda Catholic Lawyers Society (ULCS) today paid a courtesy call on the Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala, in an engagement that emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Judiciary and members of the legal profession. The Principal Judge expressed appreciation for the Society’s efforts in fostering unity, mentorship, and spiritual growth among its members. She particularly commended the Society for its regular Christian devotions and prayers shared on its WhatsApp platform, noting that such initiatives bring together lawyers from diverse institutions and areas of practice. Reflecting on the role of faith within the profession, Lady Justice Abodo observed that “we all survive on prayer,” and encouraged members to remain steadfast in that spirit. She further highlighted the Society’s diverse composition of judicial officers and practicing advocates as a unique opportunity to strengthen mentorship within the legal fraternity. The Principal Judge called on members of the Society to take an active role in shaping the next generation of lawyers through mentorship and engagement with law students. She emphasized the importance of promoting discipline, ethical conduct, and a strong sense of duty within the profession. On justice sector reforms, Lady Justice Abodo urged the Society to work closely with the Judiciary in advancing access to justice, particularly through the promotion of plea bargaining and mediation. She noted that these alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms have continued to ease case backlog and enhance timely delivery of justice. She also highlighted opportunities for further training through the Judicial Training Institute in ADR. Confirming the Judiciary’s commitment to openness and accountability, the Principal Judge encouraged the Society to maintain active engagement with the institution and to provide constructive feedback where necessary, while also recognising areas of progress. Leading the delegation, the Society President, Mr Nicholas Ecimu of S&L Advocates, who congratulated the Principal Judge on her leadership and assured her of the Society’s continued prayers and support. He noted that ULCS draws membership from across various sectors, including the Judiciary, private legal practice, banking institutions, and other organisations. He further informed the Principal Judge that the Society maintains a WhatsApp platform through which members share devotions and messages, fostering both professional and spiritual support. He added that the courtesy visit aimed to strengthen relations with the Judiciary while sharing updates on the Society’s programmes and future plans. Mr Ecimu also highlighted planned outreach activities, including a forthcoming engagement in Gulu where members will hold a Mass, noting that a similar event was previously held in Mbarara at Nyamitanga. Mr Maxim Mutabingwa of Mutabingwa & Co. Advocates, who serves as the Society’s Finance Secretary, emphasised the need to strengthen integrity within the legal profession, observing that ethical lapses remain a concern among some practitioners. He commended the Family Division of the High Court for its effectiveness in promoting mediation and called for the revival of Bar-Bench meetings to enhance dialogue between advocates and judicial officers. Mr Tibaijuka K.A of Tibaijuka & Co. Advocates encouraged wider membership in the Society, noting the professional and personal growth he has gained through participation.
