"Ixabert, what is your view on Nietzche?" The manner in which I first fell into the company of Nietzsche's ponderings is a curious little business. I'd express my own instinctive views——spontaneous, straight-from-the-gut opinions, unborrowed from any books——and would be promptly informed that I was being 'Nietzschean'. I was parroting the man, they'd tell me;——merely pilfering his notions, and it was quite impossible that I had originated any of it myself. This was long before I read anything of his works. This tedious accusation started when I was but 12, and always issued, with a sniff of intellecutual vanity, from college-educated grown-ups in their rather formidable 20s. In retrospect, I fancy there was a touch of pique about it. A certain jealousy, perhaps, in their judgment. For the same men, as I now see in hindsight, were the sort of pseudointellectual mediocrities that nowadays would be universally dismissed as insufferable 'midwits'. The sort of people who dont care for any fellow they suspect cleverer than themselves, particularly a sprightly 12-year-old boy with the temerity to display precocity. In any event, it is owing to these tedious naysayers, that I finally did take up Nietzsche, & disocvered, to my profound delight, that he & I were frequently thinking along the very same lines. We arreived at many of the same conclusions, quite independently of one another. We are, in many respects, kindred spirit; he sees eye to eye with me. He is my intellectual equal. He was brilliant enough to have independently anticppated some of the chief tenets of Ixabertian philosophy. He smooths the path which leads inevitably to Ixabert——which, by heavens, makes him a veritable genius.
