@whatSFSaid Buying a book is a risk - what if you don’t like it? Borrowing a book gives you freedom to explore. All children should be free to try a book and not like it! I love buying and owning books but I became a reader in the library.

How do we make sure all kids have the chance to fall in love with reading? They need ACCESS to a wide range of books, and FREEDOM TO CHOOSE what to read. Just give them that much, and every child can be a reader, and gain its lifelong benefits! #literacy theguardian.com/books/2024/nov…

Finding the right book, for the right reader can be the key that unlocks a love for reading and literacy skills for life. We believe that *all* reading is valid. Comic books and graphic novels can be especially powerful for reluctant readers. #GrowAGenerationOfReaders

Today is #BookshopDay, celebrating bookshops and all they do and stand for. Between Sheffield and Shetland, I’ve got to know all 180 of them: tiny island general stores; carefully-curated and vibrant indies; chains who know and cherish their customers just as much; all of them centres and facilitators of community, run with knowledge and love. I’ll be in @thebookcircleselby, 1-3pm, signing special editions of ‘Wicked’, but today, please drop in to any bookshop. Browse, pick something you don’t know, talk to a bookseller - you may even meet an author and I’m sure that you’ll take home a great new book.
