It's sometimes impossible to know what docs a government has. So when I ask for records, I sometimes say "I'd like the documents or records that contain this information" and then describe the information in detail. That can get you somewhere!

Every now and then you get a government official who calls or writes back saying "Hey we don't have that, but we have this other thing that has the information you want" but never count on that.

Happy #FOIAFriday and good morning. Let's talk about records and what they are called. By way of example, let's talk about the Epstein List. If you FOIA for "The Epstein List" I'd be surprised if you get a response, especially if government officials don't want you to have it.
